Your Little Anchorage: Creating Space at Home
Your Little Anchorage: Creating Space at Home
Even in the busiest homes, you can carve out a quiet nook that feels like your own secret harbour. It can feel really overwhelming to try to create a practice at home but our practice is meant to be there for us whenever we need it. Choose a corner or space where light drifts in softly, or let the glow of a candle guide you. Keep only what nourishes your practice, a mat, a cushion, a plant, a crystal, or even a small altar. Your space doesn’t have to be perfect; a few mismatched cushions, a mat (even with pet scratches) won’t lessen its magic. Let this space be a gentle invitation: a pause from the world, a place to breathe, stretch, and simply be. Return here often, even for a few minutes, and watch how your practice deepens, your mind softens, and your spirit finds anchor. It can be incredibly powerful to have a place in your home to fully tune into your breath and body. This nook can be your space to feel what needs to be felt, move through what needs to move and then allow yourself to continue on with your day. Make this space a screen free zone, as if you are walking into a studio, your phone has no place there. Give yourself space, give yourself time, a few minutes a day or every few days to check in with yourself in the present. Remind yourself that even 2 minutes of breath awareness is yoga, it doesn’t always have to be a full class to count.
Leaving your yoga mat somewhere visible can be a gentle reminder to keep your practice close. Even if you don’t step onto it every day, simply seeing it can invite you to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself.
